If you can see or feel a tissue bulging from the abdominal area, then there is a chance that you might have hernia. In this article, you can read about risks, signs and types of hernia.

What are the different types of Hernia?

It is important to understand different types of hernia. This will help you understand the causes, risks and treatment required for Hernia. Doctor might suggest  herina treatment depending on the type of hernia. The major types of hernia are:

  1. Inguinal Hernia: In this type, intestine or bladder extends into the groin’s inguinal canal or abdominal wall.
  2. Hiatal Hernia: This occurs when upper part of the stomach squeezes through an opening in the diaphragm.
  3. Umbilical Hernia: It occurs if intestine extends into the umbilical opening in abdominal region.
  4. Incisional Hernia: If you have undergone a surgery and the intestine protrudes through the incision done during surgery, Then it is called Incisional Hernia.

Causes of Hernia

If you have a weakness in muscle or fascia and if you exert pressure then there is a risk of hernia. Some of the other reasons because of which you might have hernia are:

  • Pregnancy, because it puts pressure on your abdomen.
  • Persistent sneezing or coughing
  • Straining on toilet
  • Strenuous Activity
  • Abdominal fluid
  • Poor nutrition
  • Suddenly gaining weight
  • Surgery in the area.

As you can see, these causes are directly related to exerting force on the abdominal wall or weakening of it. As a result of which fatty tissue extrudes out of the area where the muscle or connective tissue is weak.

The risk factors for hernia depends on the type of hernia. If you know these risk factors, then you can try to reduce the risk of developing hernia by taking proper precautions. Some of the risk factors for different types of hernia are:

  • Hiatal Hernia: If you are obese and over 50 years old then you might be at risk of Hiatal Hernia.
  • Umbilical Hernia: Premature babies and low birth weight babies have higher risk of umbilical hernia. If you are adult then the risk factors include:
