While varicose veins may seem like a cosmetic issue during initial stages, but if you ignore them, they can turn out to be life-threatening.
What are varicose veins?
The heart pumps blood every minute. The blood is then carried to various parts of the body through blood vessels (arteries and veins). An artery carries blood from the heart to various parts of the body whereas veins carry blood from various part of the body to the heart.
There are valves in veins and arteries which keeps the blood flow unidirectional. When these valves fail to maintain the unidirectional flow, the blood starts to pool in the veins. This condition is called varicose veins.
What happens if you ignore varicose veins?
Risk of varicose veins depends on the stage of the condition. During the initial stages, you might experience irritation, heaviness and pain along with other symptoms. If you consult the doctor at this stage, then varicose veins can be managed with conservative treatment (exercises, medicines, varicose veins stockings and lifestyle modifications).
As the varicose veins progress to higher grades, you will start noticing discoloration. If you consult a doctor at this stage, he/she may prescribe you medicines, exercises, veins stockings and lifestyle modifications just like in earlier stage.
Consultation or treatment at these stages will help you prevent surgery.
If you ignore varicose veins much further, then you will start to see swelling. As varicose veins progress, skin ulceration will start. Now, you should consult a doctor. At least, he/she will be able to cure varicose veins with surgery or minimally invasive treatment.
Failing to consult the doctor even after discoloration or ulcer formation may turn out to be a big mistake from your part.
Ignoring varicose veins in an early stage may not turn out to be too risky, but by ignoring varicose veins in advanced stages you are in risk of non-healing skin ulcers which can turn into skin cancer. In some cases, the varicose veins can burst and bleed or turn into DVT or Thrombophlebitis.
