  • When it travels to the lung, it can cause a serious condition known as “Pulmonary Embolism.” This essentially cuts off blood supply between the heart and the lung.
  • When it travels to the brain, it may cause an “Ischemic Stroke.” Here, the blood clot lodges in the brain.

  • FREQUENT MOVEMENT – Since the major cause of VTE is reduced mobility or immobility, frequent movement can help avert it. 1. A regular exercise regime for vascular veins keeps the blood flowing and increases circulation. 2. Sitting or standing for long periods in the same position or in a congested space increases the risks. Thus, movement is vital.
  • COMPRESSION STOCKINGS AND ELEVATION – 1. The compression stockings squeeze the legs, improving blood circulation. 2. Physicians also recommend raising an individual’s  legs for a certain period of time to increase blood circulation. The elevation causes the muscles to squeeze the veins thereby preventing the blood from pooling in the leg.
  • COMPRESSION DEVICE – 1. This is primarily useful in the case of disabled or people suffering from paralysis. Patients can wrap it around their legs and connect it to an air pump. 2. At regular intervals, they pump it with air, thereby squeezing the leg. It keeps the veins active and blood circulation good to not form a clot.
  • BLOOD THINNER – Doctors prescribe blood thinners to individuals developing blood clots more frequently than others. This is to thin the blood and reduce the chance of it clumping together. (Medication consumption should be on the advice of a licensed medical practitioner only)
