Enlarged prostate is a condition where the cells of the gland multiply increasing its size. As the gland keeps on growing, it blocks the passage of the urine. This leads to discomfort and pain while urinating. This condition of prostate enlargement is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). BPH generally starts with milder symptoms worsening with time if not well treated. This condition is more common in older men and its severity varies from person to person. Remember that BPH is treatable, and it does not pose any risk of prostate cancer. There are many surgical treatments available for BPH out of which TURP surgery is most recommended by surgeons because of its better outcomes.

If you are diagnosed with BPH and prescribed a TURP surgery, you might have a lot of questions circling your mind. Therefore, here we have the simplest explanation for this surgery along with various useful and important questions answered.

What is TURP Surgery?

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is the surgery to treat the abnormal growth of the prostate and relieve the urinary problems caused by it. In this surgery, a resectoscope is inserted into the penis passing through the urethra into the prostate gland wherein the excess tissue blocking the urine is cut off.

When does your doctor prescribe you a TURP operation?

Your doctor prescribes you a TURP surgery when non-surgical methods don’t work and when the symptoms are moderate to severe such as,

  • Frequent urge to urinate, especially at night
  • Intermittent urination
  • Delayed start while urination
  • A slow rate of urination
  • A feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder

How to prepare yourself for surgery?

The doctor might also do some tests and physical examination to determine your fitness for the surgery. In addition, you will be asked to fast at least 8 hours before the surgery.

We understand that undergoing a surgery can be stressful. This crucial time that brings anxiety ironically demands you to stay calm throughout the entire procedure. How is TURP procedure performed?

Following are the 4 TURP procedure steps:

Precautions after TURP surgery

  • Eat healthy and include fibre-rich food in your diet to avoid constipation. Your doctor might suggest you use a stool softener for easy bowel movements.
  • Drink plenty of water to flush the urine outside.
  • Avoid any strenuous activity, heavy exercises, and sexual intercourse for six weeks or more or till the time advised by your doctor.

Note that, it is normal to see some blood in your urine after the surgery. But if you see blood clots or thickened blood in your urine, along with an inability to pass urine followed by high fever, contact your doctor immediately.

Conclusively, TURP surgery is the most recommended and effective enlarged prostate surgery. It is also used to treat recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder stones, kidney or bladder damage, etc.
